Every year, thousands of parents volunteer to coach youth sports with zero training, zero materials, and zero idea what they're getting into. If that's you, welcome to the club. It's bigger than you think.

Here's your survival guide for the first season.

Rule 1: Lower the Bar (Then Clear It)

You don't need to be Coach K. You need to show up, be organized, and make it fun. That's it. If every kid is smiling at the end of practice, you won.

Rule 2: Plan Your Practices (Even Badly)

A bad plan is 10x better than no plan. Write down 4 to 5 activities, assign rough times, and you're set. The plan will fall apart by minute 15. That's normal. Having one means you know what to do next instead of standing there.

Rule 3: The 5 Minute Rule for Young Kids

Ages 4 to 8 have the attention span of a goldfish with a sugar rush. No drill should last more than 5 to 8 minutes. When their eyes glaze over, switch. Speed over depth.

Rule 4: Positive Coaching Is Not Soft Coaching

"Nice throw! Next time try stepping toward your target." That's coaching. "No, not like that!" That's why kids quit sports. The research is clear: positive coaching produces better athletes AND better people.

Rule 5: Talk to Parents Early

Send one email before the season: practice schedule, what to bring, your coaching philosophy (even if it's just "we're here to have fun and learn"). Sets expectations and prevents 90% of parent drama.

Rule 6: It's About the Kids, Not the Scoreboard

Especially at the rec level. Equal playing time. Rotate positions. Let the kid who's struggling have a moment. Twenty years from now, they won't remember the score. They'll remember how you made them feel.

Rule 7: Ask for Help

Other parents can run a station. Your assistant coach doesn't need to know the sport. They just need to stand at second base and encourage kids. You are not alone unless you choose to be.

Rule 8: You're Making a Bigger Impact Than You Know

Studies show that the coach is the #1 factor in whether a kid stays in sports. Not talent, not the team, not the league. The coach. You're literally shaping whether these kids love or hate sports for the rest of their lives. No pressure.

Just kidding. The fact that you're reading a guide means you're already one of the good ones.
